Storm Water Pollution Prevention Tips

  • Dispose of household waste properly. Contact the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority (RSWA) with questions concerning the proper disposal of household hazardous waste. Click here to visit the RSWA website.
  • Recycle. If your neighborhood does not have its own recycling program, bring your recyclables to one of the drop-offs at the University or at RSWA.
  • Clean up after your pet.
  • Use a commercial car wash for cleaning your vehicle.
  • Volunteer for a stream or neighborhood cleanup program.
  • Volunteer for a storm drain labeling program.
  • Conserve water by repairing leaking faucets toilets and take short showers.
  • Conserve energy, use energy efficient compact fluorescent lightbulbs, turn off the lights when leaving your residence, and use public transportation or walk.
  • When doing laundry, do full, not partial, loads.
  • If you are interested in volunteering for campus clean up or drain marking events, contact Jess Wenger.
