This course assumes some knowledge of basic science. After a brief introduction to radiation physics, this course covers the interaction of radiation with matter, biological effects and risks of radiation exposures, regulatory and administrative dose and exposure limits, personnel monitoring for radiation exposure, internal deposition and external exposure protection methods, radiation measurement and measuring equipment, radioactive waste and emergency procedures.

Radiation & Chemical Safety Annual Refresher Training
This training is required annually for all Principal Investigators, Authorized Users, Qualified Users and General Users of radioactive materials at the University of Virginia and the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center. This training is in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1450 - Chemical Hygiene Standard, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) 10 CFR 19.12 - Instruction to Workers and provisions of the University of Virginia's Radioactive Material License.

Radiation Safety Guide Lecture
This two-hour lecture is mandatory for all independent users of radioactive material and radiation producing equipment at the University of Virginia. This lecture highlights the contents of the UVa Radiation Safety Guide. The Radiation Safety Guide provides information about basic policies and procedures in place at the University that ensure compliance with State and Federal license requirements. Material covered by this this guide includes: organizational structure, authorization policies, exposure and release limits, receipt and transfer of radioactive material, basic laboratory operating requirements, waste handling procedures, use of radioactive material in humans, radiation producing equipment, bioassay requirements and emergency procedures.

Radiation Safety Guide Lecture for Patient Care Staff
This on-line training is mandatory for all individuals in the hospital who are issued a radiation dosimeter and work with or in the vicinity of radioactive material/patients or radiation producing equipment at the University of Virginia. This lecture highlights the contents of the UVa Radiation Safety Guide. The Radiation Safety Guide provides information about basic policies and procedures in place at the University that ensure compliance with State and Federal license requirements. Material covered by this this guide includes: organizational structure, authorization policies, exposure limits, proper use of dosimeters, receipt and transfer of radioactive material, basic radiation protection methods, use of radioactive material in humans, pregnancy policy and emergency procedures.

Radiation Safety Training for Nuclear Medicine Staff
This course provides Radiation Safety Training for Nuclear Medicine staff. All Nuclear Medicine staff must complete this training before being allowed to work independently with radioactive material at the University of Virginia. This training may be used by Nuclear Medicine staff to fulfill their annual retraining requirement as well. As outlined in NRC guidance for Medical Use Licensees, instruction on a comprehensive list of topics is provided. These topics along with other more specific University policies are covered in this training module. A test of the material covered in this module is included at the end of the module. A score of at least 80% is required to successfully pass this test.

Tc-99m Annual Retraining (Epilepsy Staff Only)
This training may be used by nursing and other staff involved in the care of epilepsy patients injected with Tc-99m to meet initial and annual refresher radiation safety training requirements. The training covers the authorization process, basic radiation physics, health effects from exposure to radiation, risks, contamination control, spill procedures, survey requirements and technique, recordkeeping requirements.

Radiation Safety In the Patient Care Environment
Radiation Safety traning for nurses and other hospital staff caring for patients who receive radiation therapy (e.g. radioactive iodine, brachytherapy, implants, HDR).
Radiation Safety Training for Health Care Workers Using Fluoroscopic X-ray Systems
The use of X-ray fluoroscopy has increased dramatically in recent years. Advances in medical technology have resulted in the development of more powerful X-ray machines used during complex procedures requiring extensive use of fluoroscopy. The use of such equipment by personnel who have not received specialized training in the proper use of radiation creates the potential for excessive radiation exposure to personnel and patients.
This training module was developed to provide you with basic radiation protection information. As a radiation worker, you should be familiar with the currently available information regarding risks of radiation exposure during the procedures you participate in. A number of topics are covered in this module, from basic protection methods to optimal use of the fluoroscopy equipment. Because this module may be used by individuals with varying backgrounds and experience, the module has been divided into chapters to allow the user to access all or a few of the chapters which may be applicable to their role during fluoroscopy use.
