Stormwater Pollution Prevention Tips

  • Dispose of household waste in the dumpsters provided.
  • Make use of on grounds recycling programs.
  • Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth or shaving.
  • Report leaking faucets or running toilets to maintenance staff or your landlord.
  • Take showers that are no longer than 5 minutes.
  • Take fewer showers.
  • Use energy efficient compact fluorescent lightbulbs.
  • Turn off your computer or have it switch to sleep mode when you are not using it. Turn off monitors, printers, scanners and other devices when you are not using them.
  • If you’re the last one leaving your room or apartment, make sure you turn off the lights (stereo, fans, TV, etc...).
  • When the sun is up, open curtains and turn off unnecessary lights. Natural light is better quality than artificial and it’s free.
  • When doing laundry, do full, not partial, loads.
  • If you are interested in volunteering for campus clean up or drain marking events, contact Jess Wenger at jsw6d@virginia.edu or 982-5540.
