Medical Surveillance (part of the UVa Research Related Medical Health Assessment)
BSL-2 Medical Clearance
Work with certain materials and agents at Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) have a wide range of risk, some of higher hazard than others. Personal health status may impact an individual's susceptibility to infection, ability to receive immunizations or prophylactic interventions. Therefore, all laboratory personnel and particularly women of child-bearing age should be provided with information regarding immune competence and conditions that may predispose them to infection. Individuals having these conditions should be encouraged to self-identify to the occupational healthcare provider, UVa WorkMed (434-243-0075, website), for appropriate counseling and guidance.
- Additionally, Principal Investigators (PI) are required to perform a risk-based assessment of the BSL-2 agents with respect to the individual health status of their personnel (Note: question in the IAR prompts the PI to submit this information online).
- All faculty, staff and students should consult with their laboratory supervisor to determine which agents or activities require occupational medical services (e.g. vaccination, clearance to wear a respirator, etc.).
For example: Medical services are provided through UVa WorkMed for those personnel who are at risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, vaccinia and other orthopoxviruses, and other agents, as needed. Contact UVa WorkMed (434-243-0075, website) for more information how to enroll in the UVa Research Related Medical Health Assessment for Biohazardous Agents.
BSL-3 Medical Clearance
BSL-3 Medical Clearance is mandatory for all researchers working with Risk Group 3 agents. Contact UVa WorkMed (434-243-0075, website) to schedule a UVa Research Related Medical Health Assessment.
